The recipients of the โ43rd Busan Industrial Awardsโ have been announced as Choi Geum-sik, Chairman of SUNBO Industries Co., Ltd.; Kim Un-seok, Chairman of DEOKJAE CONSTRUCTION Co., Ltd.; and Song Hae-hwa, Chief Executive Officer of OCEAN ENTEC Co., Ltd.
On the 26th, the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry held the award ceremony at its Grand Hall, honoring three business leaders who have upheld the regional economy through innovative management, technological development, and dedicated social contributions despite uncertain domestic and global economic conditions. Established in 1983, the Busan Industrial Awards have, for more than 40 years, recognized business leaders who have left a significant mark on the development of commerce and industry in Busan.
The recipient in the Management Category, Choi Geum-sik, Chairman of SUNBO Industries Co., Ltd., is widely regarded as a figure who has transformed the paradigm of Koreaโs shipbuilding and offshore equipment industry through relentless challenges since founding the company in 1986. Chairman Choi was the first in the world to introduce the concept of โmodule unitsโ to the shipbuilding and offshore equipment sector. This innovation dramatically shortened shipyard production periods and improved process efficiency, leading global standardization, and is cited as a representative best-practice case in the industry.
Chairman Choiโs pursuit of innovation continues today. Recently, the company succeeded in commercializing next-generation eco-friendly ship fuel supply systems for LNG, methanol, and ammonia, positioning itself at the forefront of the global green ship market. In addition, by boldly expanding its business into renewable energy, including a wind powerโlinked water electrolysis demonstration project in Jeju, the company has elevated not only Koreaโs shipbuilding industry but also the competitiveness of the broader energy sector, earning high praise.
The Technology Category award was presented to Kim Un-seok, Chairman of DEOKJAE CONSTRUCTION Co., Ltd., who has raised the standards of Busanโs construction industry under the belief that โtechnology is quality.โ Chairman Kim actively introduced field-oriented patented technologies and specialized construction methods, securing capabilities for the construction of highly complex super-high-rise buildings.
Particularly noteworthy is the smart safety system established by Chairman Kim. By integrating IoT (Internet of Things) technology into BIM (Building Information Modeling)-based design and construction management, he successfully implemented a โsmart safety and quality management systemโ at construction sites. As a result, the company achieved the remarkable record of maintaining a zero industrial accident rate for more than 10 consecutive years.
The Social Contribution Category award went to Song Hae-hwa, Chief Executive Officer of OCEAN ENTEC Co., Ltd. CEO Song has consistently practiced the value of shared growth, believing that corporate growth is complete only when achieved together with the local community. In addition to supporting welfare institutions and scholarship programs, he has taken the lead in creating quality jobs for local youth, earning recognition for establishing a virtuous cycle in which corporate profits are reinvested into the region.
Yang Jae-saeng, Chairman of the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated, โI extend my deepest respect to the award recipients who have served as a steadfast pillar of the Busan economy amid strong headwinds such as the rise of protectionism and the reorganization of global supply chains.โ He added, โThe Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry will continue to spare no effort in supporting local companies so they can secure innovative competitiveness and achieve renewed growth.โ
